Adam McDonough Advances to Bellator Finals with KO Win
Adam McDonough got the biggest win of his career Friday night when he stopped the very tough Nathan Coy by KO in the semi-finals of the Bellator Welterweight Tournament. The fight took place at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California at Bellator 116. McDonough, who trains at both the GetSum Compound in St. Cloud and The Cellar Gym in Minneapolis advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Jesse Juarez back in March. Nathan Coy fought on that same show and earned his spot by defeating Paul Bradley.
On this night, McDonough landed an early strike that caught the attention of Coy and enticed him to bring the fight to the ground. Coy has very impressive Division 1 wrestling credentials, but McDonough was able to keep Coy from getting a dominant position and battled back to his feet. In the next exchange McDonough threw a kick as Coy attempted to shoot in and caught a knee to the head that stunned Coy. McDonough pounced and almost got the stoppage in the first round, but Coy was able to survive the round. In the second, McDonough came out strong and staggered Coy with a left hand. Again Coy tried to take the fight to the mat, but McDonough was able to back away and re-engage with another left that knocked Coy out.
With this win Adam McDonough advances to the finals of the Bellator Welterweight Tournament at an event that has not yet been scheduled. McDonough will face the winner of Andrey Koreshkov and Sam Oropeza who fight May 2nd in Atlantic City.
