MMA Fighters Victorious at Grand Casino Hinckley
Jon Lewis and Gelix Vicuna made their Mixed Martial Arts debuts Saturday at the Grand Casino Hinckley. Both fighters left the cage victoriously and put on impressive performances.
Jon Lewis is a kickboxing veteran with a 13-2 record and 3 Amateur World Titles, but questions arose over how he’d fare in the cage and against an experienced grappler. Lewis answered those questions very decisively Saturday against Johnny DeFile. Lewis made a statement in the opening seconds as he landed a kick to the body that made his opponent groan. Lewis then took DeFile to the ground and assumed the top position where he began to work his ground and pound. A short while later Lewis landed a very short, but powerful left hook from side control that put DeFile to sleep just :49 seconds into the first round.
Gelix Vicuna made his debut against Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada native, George Carlos. Although both fighters were making their first appearance in the cage, they put on an exciting performance for the fans. Vicuna looked impressive in the first two rounds landing the more effective strikes when standing and controlling the fight from the top position when on the ground. But things changed quickly in the final round when Vicuna was dropped by a right hand, dazed, and showed great determination to fight out of several dangerous positions. Vicuna took some damaging shots from the bottom, but was able to hang on and force a judges decision. All three judges scored the fight unanimously for Gelix Vicuna, two rounds to one.
Congratulations guys!
